1. Teaching style
The class sessions include one or more of the following teaching and learning techniques: lectures, demonstrations, discussions, hands-on and laboratory experiences. Students work in small groups in lab.

2. Self-paced, independent learning with instructor as facilitator? NO - Generally, I guide the students through the material and concepts although I strive to allow students to work at their own pace whenever possible.

3. Type of assessment
Exams - Objective written exams and lab practicals
Occasional lab reports that are turned in for a grade

4. How many assessments/exams?
4 unit exams in lecture and 4 unit exams in lab, plus some lab reports

5. Grading policy - Straight %
Drop policy - I follow the drop policy in the college catalog. I will not grant a drop after a student has received a Final Exam from me.

6. Timeliness of feedback to students - Always within one week.

7. Is the final exam/assessment comprehensive? - NO

8. Weight of final exam/assessment in relation to final course grade.
Each of the four lab units and each of the four lecture units count 1/8 of the final grade. The final exam is the same weight as the other unit lecture exams.

9. Attendance Policy - How does it affect the final grade?
My exams are very heavily based on the material we cover in class, so students find missing class a distinct disadvantage. Therefore, I do not actually grade on attendance. Also, some lab reports are turned in for a grade, and completing the lab work is very difficult if you miss the lab period.

10. Homework policy - Homework consists mainly of reading assignments and questions that the students answer for their own benefit.

11. Use of technology in class - Yes, videos and laser discs.

12. Available outside help: CD ROMs, computer disks, videos, etc.

13. Why should students enroll in your class?
Students in my class use an investigative approach to learn about the similarities of all living creatures, as well as the diversity of life on Earth. I try to convey the fascination that I have for the study of life, in addition to helping the student develop a solid understanding of the concepts of introductory biology.
